Every October I get calls from homeowners who want their driveway sealed before winter, and about a third of those driveways have a crack running edge to edge that's wider than a dime. Sealcoat is not a repair. It's a coating. If you pay someone to squeegee sealer over a cracked slab, you've spent money to hide a problem that's about to get worse, because the crack is still there under a thin layer of black, and water will still find its way into it.

The other issue nobody explains upfront is the weather window. A driveway sealed too close to the cutoff looks fine the day the crew leaves and then goes soft, sticky, or blotchy the first cold, damp week that follows. I tell homeowners to plan this job for September through early October, not the weekend before Thanksgiving. When to Just Wait Until Spring

If you're past the cure window, or your driveway has real structural cracking rather than surface hairlines, the better move is often to patch the worst spots for winter and plan the real work, crack repair, base patching, or full sealcoat, for April or May when you've got a reliable stretch of warm, dry days ahead of you. A rushed November sealcoat job that fails by spring costs you twice. A driveway that goes into winter with its cracks properly filled, even without a fresh coat of sealer on top, holds up better than one with a bad seal job masking real damage.
