You probably don't think about the sand between your pavers until it's gone. Once the sand is gone, water has a straight path down past the pavers into the bedding layer and base gravel underneath. That base sits through roughly 40 to 50 freeze-thaw cycles on Long Island most winters, more in years when we get a January thaw followed by a hard refreeze. Water trapped in that base freezes, expands close to 9 percent, and pushes. It never pushes evenly. You get one paver rocking underfoot, a corner popping up a quarter inch, a low spot that ponds every March. A paver system only works if three layers stay separate: the joint sand on top, the bedding sand under the pavers, and the compacted base gravel below that. Open joints let surface water blast straight down and start moving fines out of the bedding layer, which is how you get pavers that settle unevenly even without a hard freeze. Add a freeze on top of that and the water sitting in the void refreezes at the surface, lifts the paver, and melts, leaving a slightly bigger void than before. Repeat that 40 to 50 times a winter and you understand why a patio that looked fine in November looks like a wave pool by April.

The Long Island Freeze-Thaw Math

Inland and upstate contractors deal with fewer, deeper freezes. Long Island, especially close to the Sound or the South Shore, swings back and forth across 32 degrees constantly from December through March because the surrounding water moderates the air temperature. That's actually worse for jointing sand and shallow base material, because the damage isn't one deep freeze, it's dozens of shallow freeze-thaw cycles working the same top few inches of base over and over. It isn't magic and it isn't silicone. It still needs the joint properly filled to the right depth, properly compacted with a plate or hand tamper, and properly watered in during install, or it cures unevenly and cracks out in year one anyway.

The Install Temperature Window

This is where most fall projects get it wrong. Polymeric sand generally needs surface and air temperatures in the 50 to 90 degree range to install and cure correctly, with roughly 24 to 48 hours of dry weather afterward so it isn't rained on before it sets. On Long Island that gives you a real window from late September through about mid-November most years, and it closes fast once overnight lows start dropping toward freezing. Morning dew is its own problem here in the fall, pavers near the coast can stay damp until mid-morning, and you cannot activate polymeric sand on a wet surface and expect a clean cure. Push this into late November and you're gambling with a nor'easter or an early frost undoing the work before it sets.

Salt Air, Sandy Soil, and the South Shore Water Table

With water on three sides of the Island, salt-laden air accelerates efflorescence and breaks down lower-grade sand products faster than you'd see inland. Native soil here is sandy and drains quickly, which sounds like an advantage until you realize a lot of older patios were laid on a thin base without enough compaction, so the sand drains right through gaps in the base instead of staying put. On the South Shore, in towns like Babylon, Islip, and Southampton, the high water table means that base gravel is often sitting closer to saturated than you'd think even in a dry fall, which feeds more water into the freeze-thaw cycle from underneath, not just from the top.
