Most older Long Island homes have a single vanity light strip and a builder-grade overhead light — functional but far from ideal. Good bathroom lighting serves multiple purposes: task lighting for grooming, ambient lighting for atmosphere, and accent lighting that makes the space feel designed rather than default.

Bathroom Lighting Layers: What Every Long Island Bath Needs

Task lighting (vanity area): The most important lighting in any bathroom. Task lighting at the vanity needs to illuminate your face evenly from both sides without casting shadows — the enemy of applying makeup or shaving accurately. The best solution is a light fixture or sconce on each side of the mirror, at face height (approximately 60–65 inches from the floor to center). A single overhead vanity strip creates shadows from eyebrows and nose that make accurate grooming difficult.

For Long Island bathrooms with wider mirrors (48–72 inch double vanity mirrors), a long LED bar fixture above the mirror can work if it extends the full width. Look for fixtures rated at 1,600+ lumens with a color temperature of 2700–3000K (warm white) — bright enough to see clearly without the harshness of cool white light.

Ambient lighting: The general lighting for the room. In most Long Island bathroom remodels, this means recessed LED lights in the ceiling. Recessed cans on a dimmer circuit allow you to set the mood — bright for morning routines, low for evening baths. Aim for one 4-inch recessed can per 20–25 square feet of bathroom space.

Shower lighting: Any recessed fixture inside a shower must be rated for wet locations (not just damp locations). Most standard recessed cans are not shower-rated. Matte black fixtures: Consistently the most popular finish in Long Island bathroom remodels at the $12,000–$25,000 price point. Matte black works with warm tile, white subway tile, and wood-tone vanities equally well. It reads as intentionally designed rather than default.

Brushed gold / champagne bronze: Growing in popularity in higher-end Long Island bathrooms, particularly in areas like Manhasset, Lloyd Harbor, and Old Westbury. Warmer than chrome, more elevated than brushed nickel. Works especially well with warm tile palettes and wood vanities.

Brushed nickel: The safe, classic choice. Works with almost everything and looks current if the fixture style is modern. The dominant finish in Nassau and Suffolk County mid-range bathroom remodels.

LED mirrors: Backlit or lighted mirrors with integrated LED strips are becoming more common in Long Island master baths. They provide even task lighting, look modern, and eliminate the need for a separate vanity fixture. Cost: $300–$800 for the mirror, plus installation. Increasingly popular in smaller bathrooms where separate fixture space is limited.
