Every building department, permit office and licensing authority a Long Island homeowner or contractor actually has to deal with — 23 of them, with the address, the phone number that reaches a person, the counter hours and the official page. Checked against each jurisdiction's own site on September 2, 2026.
This is the question that wastes the most time on Long Island permits, and it catches homeowners and out-of-area contractors alike.
Suffolk County has ten towns and thirty-two incorporated villages. Nassau has three towns, two cities and sixty-four villages. A village inside a town runs its own building department, with its own code layered on top of the New York State code — and a village will often review the look of visible exterior work in a way the town does not.
So an address inside the Village of Patchogue files at 14 Baker Street. An address two blocks outside the village line files with the Town of Brookhaven at Farmingville. Same postal address, same ZIP code, two different counters and two different sets of rules. Port Jefferson Village and Port Jefferson Station are the same story on the same road; so are Massapequa Park and Massapequa; so are Babylon Village and the Town of Babylon.
If you are not certain which side of a line you are on, ask the village first — they will tell you quickly if you are not theirs.
