House Painters.

Interior and exterior painting across Nassau and Suffolk County. Exteriors in the fall window, interiors all winter, cabinets sprayed not brushed — and the rot repair, plaster work and carpentry that has to happen first, done by the same licensed contractor.

Paint Is The
Last Ten
Percent.

The other ninety percent is preparation, and it is the only thing that decides whether a repaint still looks right in year eight or starts failing in year two. Washing, scraping, spot-priming every bare area, resetting nail pops, cutting out plaster cracks, re-caulking every joint — and replacing the rotted sill instead of filling it.

We are a licensed general contractor, not only a painting company. When we open a corner and find the reason it keeps cracking, we can fix that and then paint it. Suffolk County Home Improvement License HI-68303, insured, same crew since 2018.

Why Alec's

Two Seasons,
One Crew

We Work The Right Season

Exteriors go on in September and October when surfaces are warm and humidity has broken. Interiors run December through March when heating season dries the air and paint cures evenly. We do not paint your siding in November to close out a schedule.

We Fix It, Then Paint It

Rotted sills, failed corner boards, loose corner bead, plaster that has lost its keys, water stains that need the leak found first. A painting-only crew has to stop and send you elsewhere. We are the general contractor.

Licensed & Insured, Verifiable

Suffolk County Home Improvement License HI-68303, general liability and workers compensation. Certificates come from our agent, not a photo on a phone. Written scope before anything starts.

Seasonal Reality

Painting Has
A Calendar On
Long Island.

Exterior paint is limited by surface temperature and dew point, and once those fall out of range the job waits for spring. Interior work has no such limit — and it is actually better in winter. Here is how we run the year.

Sept – Oct · Exterior Prime Time

The best exterior weeks of the year here. Surfaces still warm, humidity broken, no spring pollen landing in a wet finish. Full exteriors, trim, shutters, front doors, deck staining, and the caulking and rot repair that should be closed before freeze-thaw season. Booked from August — read the fall window guide.

Nov · The Close-Out

Body coats become unreliable. Small south-facing surfaces still go. This is the month for exterior carpentry, glazing and sealing every open joint so the house does not spend the winter taking on water — and for getting on the spring exterior calendar before it fills.

Dec – Mar · Interior Season

Heating season pulls indoor humidity down to 25–35%, which is genuinely better for curing than a humid August. Whole-house repaints, trim and doors, cabinet spraying, ceiling and plaster repair, basements. Best availability and shortest lead times of the year — see why winter wins inside.

Selling In Spring?

Paint in January or February, not April. Listing photos are shot one to two weeks before a listing goes live, and you want the house finished, cured, aired out and restaged before the photographer arrives — not competing for a painter with every other seller on the Island.

Substrates

What Your House
Is Made Of
Changes Everything.

Long Island housing stock is specific, and each substrate has a rule that gets broken constantly. Here are the ones that matter.

Cedar Shingle & Clapboard

The North Shore and East End default. Cedar tannins bleed straight through standard primer, so it needs a stain-blocking primer or you get brown staining within weeks. And once cedar is painted you are committed — going back to a semi-transparent stain means stripping.

Vinyl Siding

Paintable with vinyl-safe product, and you cannot go significantly darker than the original color. A darker panel absorbs more heat than it was designed for, expands past tolerance and warps. This is the single most common way a well-meant vinyl repaint destroys the siding.

Aluminum & Fiber Cement

Chalked aluminum is one of the highest-return exteriors on the Island — wash thoroughly, bonding primer, done. Faded Hardie repaints cleanly in 100% acrylic; check your factory warranty terms first. Both pair naturally with our siding work.

Plaster & Older Interiors

Village housing in Patchogue, Bay Shore, Northport, Sayville and Babylon is real plaster over wood lath. Stress cracks get cut out, bridged and floated wide — not filled with lightweight spackle that telegraphs back through by spring. More on wall repair.

Salt Air Changes The Prep

South of Montauk Highway, along the North Shore harbors, and on the bays and canals, airborne salt deposits constantly on your siding. Salt is hygroscopic — it pulls moisture out of the air and holds it against the surface. Skipping the wash on a waterfront house guarantees adhesion failure, and exterior finishes near the water realistically last five to seven years against seven to ten inland. The south and west elevations always go first regardless.

Common Questions

House Painting FAQ

Two different answers. Exteriors: September and early October are the best weeks of the year — warm surfaces, low humidity, no spring pollen. Interiors: December through March, because heating season drops indoor humidity and paint cures faster and more evenly than it does in a humid Long Island August.
Yes, and it is the best season for it. Indoor humidity during heating season runs 25 to 35 percent, which is ideal for curing. We use low-VOC paint in occupied homes and stage the work so a bedroom and bathroom stay outside the work zone. You do not need to leave.
Body coats generally run through late October on Long Island, with small surfaces like doors, shutters and trim workable into early November on south-facing walls. The limit is surface temperature staying above the product minimum for several hours after application, including overnight.
Prep is most of the job. Washing, scraping, sanding, spot-priming every bare area, resetting nail pops, repairing plaster and drywall, re-caulking joints, and replacing rotted trim. We are a licensed general contractor, so rot repair and carpentry are part of our scope rather than something we hand to someone else.
Yes, sprayed rather than brushed. Doors and drawer fronts come off, get labeled, degreased, sanded, bonding-primed and sprayed flat so there is no brush texture. A standard kitchen is five to eight working days. Winter is our best availability for cabinet work.
Yes, with vinyl-safe paint, and you cannot go significantly darker than the original color. Darker colors absorb more heat than the panel was designed for and cause warping. We will tell you what your siding can and cannot take.
Yes. Alec's Construction Inc. holds Suffolk County Home Improvement License HI-68303 and carries general liability and workers compensation. We will send certificates from our agent on request.
A single room is typically one day. A full first floor with trim and doors is four to six working days. A whole-house interior in an occupied home runs one to two weeks. A full exterior on a 2,000 square foot house is usually five to ten working days depending on prep and weather.
