The Psychology of First Impressions

Clean machine-cut edges. Even without Belgian block, a driveway paved with clean, straight machine-cut edges rather than ragged hand-trimmed margins looks dramatically more finished. When getting paving quotes, ask whether the contractor uses a paving machine with edge-forming capability or cuts edges by hand. The difference in appearance is significant.

Apron design at the street. The transition from driveway to street (the apron) is highly visible. A properly designed apron that's flush with the roadway, properly sloped, and cleanly edged contributes substantially to the overall look. A crumbling or uneven apron draws the eye negatively regardless of how good the rest of the driveway looks.

Landscaping integration. Low ground covers, ornamental grasses, or small shrubs along the driveway borders soften the transition between hardscape and lawn. This is inexpensive to add after paving and dramatically changes how the driveway reads from the street.
