That soil moves. A horizontal crack running along a foundation wall, particularly in the middle third of the wall height, usually means hydrostatic and lateral soil pressure is pushing the wall inward. I find these most often on block foundations backfilled with heavy clay-mixed fill instead of clean stone, which traps water against the wall and freezes solid every winter, expanding and pushing on the wall like a slow hydraulic jack. If you can see any bow when you hold a level against the wall, or the crack has a visible step where one side sits proud of the other, stop patching it yourself. That wall needs carbon fiber straps, steel bracing, or in bad cases wall replacement, and it needs it before another winter of freeze-thaw cycling adds more lateral load.

Why Long Island Winters Are Uniquely Hard on This

We run somewhere around 40 to 50 freeze-thaw cycles a season here, which is brutal compared to inland climates that freeze once and stay frozen. Every one of those cycles is water in a crack expanding roughly 9 percent as it turns to ice, then relaxing as it thaws, then refreezing that night.
