Kitchen Remodel Permits in the Town of Islip, NY

Islip publishes the clearest statement on Long Island of what does not need a permit, and cabinets are named on it. That is good news if your kitchen is a straight replacement, and it is exactly why Islip homeowners get caught — the exemption covers the cabinets, not what is behind them.

The rule that covers most kitchens

Here is the whole thing in one sentence: swapping cabinets and countertops in the same footprint is finish work and generally needs no building permit. The moment you move the sink, run gas to a new range location, add circuits, or take down a wall, you are in permit territory.

What Islip requires

• New circuits or a service upgrade for an induction cooktop. Electrical inspection through the inspection agency.
• A wall opens up. Structural, drawings, permit — a different conversation entirely.

If you are in the incorporated Village of Islandia, Brightwaters, Ocean Beach or another village inside the Town, the village building department governs, not the Town. We have had to settle that question for a client mid-project and it changes the entire filing path — a mailing address does not tell you which one applies.

What this means for a normal kitchen

A straight replacement — new boxes and counters where the old ones were, sink staying put — is usually finish work and usually does not need a building permit. A kitchen where the sink moves, the range converts to gas, the panel gets touched, or a wall comes out is a permitted job, and the sooner it is filed the cheaper it is.
