Paver installation base preparation on a Long Island job site

If you understand this sequence, you can evaluate any paver bid on Long Island in about five minutes. Roughly two thirds of the labor happens before a single paver is set, and that two thirds is the part you will never see again once the job is done.

Step 1: Layout and Utility Marking

Before anything moves, the area gets laid out and utilities get marked. In New York, calling 811 before digging is required and free. On Long Island the ones that get hit are irrigation lines, low-voltage lighting and private gas runs to pool heaters and generators, none of which the public locate service marks. A good contractor asks you what is out there.

Step 2: Excavation

Soil is removed across the full footprint, usually ten to fourteen inches for a patio and more for a driveway. Two details matter here. The excavation must extend beyond the finished paver edge — typically six to twelve inches on each side — so the edge restraint has compacted base under it rather than loose soil. And the subgrade itself gets compacted before any stone goes in.

A crew that digs only to the exact patio outline is building a patio whose edges will fail first.

Step 3: Geotextile Fabric

On sites with clay-heavy or silty subsoil, a woven geotextile separates the native soil from the crushed stone base. Without it, over years of wetting and freezing, fine soil particles migrate up into the stone and clog the voids. The base loses its drainage and its structure. Fabric costs very little and is cheap insurance on much of Nassau County and the North Shore.

Step 4: Base Stone, in Lifts

This is the step that separates real installations from the rest. Crushed stone — typically a dense-graded aggregate with a mix of sizes so it locks together — goes in and gets compacted in lifts of about three to four inches. Compact, add more, compact again.

Why lifts matter: a plate compactor only transmits meaningful force a few inches down. Dump twelve inches of stone and roll the top once and you have a compacted crust over a loose bed. It feels solid on inspection day. It settles over the next three winters.

Typical depths: six to eight inches compacted for a patio in well-draining soil, ten to twelve inches for a driveway, more for either in poor soil. Base should also be pitched at roughly one to two percent to shed water — the finished surface follows the base, so the drainage is established here.

Step 5: Bedding Layer

About one inch of coarse bedding sand or stone dust, screeded dead flat with screed rails, gives the pavers a consistent setting surface. This layer is not for correcting base problems. A crew using three inches of sand to level out an uneven base is building a patio that will ripple, because sand of that depth migrates.

Step 6: Setting the Pavers

Pavers are set from a straight starting line, usually working outward, placed rather than slid so the bedding layer is not disturbed. Joints should be tight and consistent. Cuts at the borders are made with a wet saw, and a good crew makes fewer, cleaner cuts because they planned the layout.

Step 7: Edge Restraint

Rigid restraint is installed around the entire perimeter and spiked into the compacted base — not into soil. This is what holds the field together. Without it, the outer courses migrate outward under load and freeze-thaw, joints open, and the failure works its way inward.

Missing or inadequate edge restraint is the second most common shortcut after thin base, and it is the reason so many patios show a fanned-out, gappy border after five years.

Step 8: Compaction of the Field and Jointing Sand

The pavers get compacted with a plate compactor over a protective pad, which beds them into the sand and levels the surface. Then polymeric sand is swept into the joints, the surface is cleaned off thoroughly, and the sand is lightly misted in stages to activate the binder.

Two ways this goes wrong: sand left on the paver faces before wetting leaves a permanent haze, and over-watering washes the binder out of the joints. It needs to be dry and it needs the right touch. Polymeric sand also needs about 24 hours without rain, which is why crews watch the forecast for this step specifically.

Step 9: Cleanup and Final Grading

The perimeter gets backfilled and graded so soil meets the patio edge cleanly, disturbed lawn gets repaired, and debris leaves the site.

How to Use This When You Get Bids

Ask each contractor to write on the proposal: excavation depth, base depth after compaction, number of compaction lifts, whether geotextile is included, edge restraint type, and jointing sand type. Contractors who do it right answer immediately. The gap between a real bid and a cheap one lives almost entirely in steps two, four and seven.
