How Long Does a Kitchen Remodel Take on Long Island?

Two answers, and people quote the wrong one at each other constantly.

On-site construction: six to ten weeks for most kitchens. First design meeting to final coat of paint: three to six months, because design, ordering and permits all happen before anyone swings a hammer.

When a contractor says “about eight weeks” they usually mean the first number. When you ask “when will my kitchen be done” you mean the second. That mismatch is the source of most kitchen-remodel resentment.

The real timeline, phase by phase

• Design and decisions — 2 to 6 weeks. Measurements, layout, doors, finishes, counters. This phase runs on how fast you decide, which is why it varies more than any other.
• Ordering and lead time — 1 to 16 weeks. Stock arrives in one to two weeks, semi-custom three to eight, custom six to sixteen. The clock starts at final order approval. Full lead time breakdown.
• Permits — 2 to 6 weeks, in parallel if you are organized. Only applies if plumbing, gas, electrical or structure changes. What triggers a permit by town.
• Demolition — 1 to 3 days. Satisfying and fast.
• Rough plumbing and electrical — 3 to 7 days, plus inspection time if permitted.
• Cabinet installation — 3 to 7 days.
• Counter template and fabrication — 1 to 3 weeks. This is the gap nobody warns you about: counters cannot be templated until the cabinets are in and level, then fabrication takes one to three weeks. Your kitchen sits cabinet-only during it.
• Counter install, backsplash, plumbing hookup, trim, paint — 1 to 2 weeks.
• Punch list — a few days, spread across a few weeks in practice.

By scope

• Cosmetic refresh — paint, hardware, backsplash: 1 to 2 weeks.
• Refacing — 3 to 10 days on site.
• Mid-range replacement, same layout: 4 to 8 weeks on site.
• Full remodel with layout changes or a wall removed: 8 to 12 weeks or more.

How long you are actually without a kitchen

Shorter than the project. Realistically about six weeks of no usable kitchen on a full remodel — from demolition to the day the sink is reconnected. How to survive that stretch has the practical version.

Where it slips, in order of likelihood

• Decisions. By a wide margin the most common cause. Every day you are choosing a door color, nobody is building anything.
• Cabinet delivery. Second most common, and mostly out of everyone's hands once the order is placed.
• The counter gap. Template-to-install is one to three weeks and it is unavoidable, so plan for it rather than being surprised.
• Inspections. Fine if scheduled ahead, a week lost if not.
• Discovering something behind the wall. Old wiring, a leak that has been quietly going for years, a surprise vent stack. Budget contingency time and money for this on any house over forty years old — on Long Island, that is most of them.

How to make it faster

• Decide everything before demolition. Every choice made up front is a day removed from the middle.
• Use cabinets that already exist. This removes the single largest variable outright.
• Do not move the plumbing. Saves the permit track and the rough-in phase entirely.
• Order counters the day cabinets are set, not the week after.
• Have appliances on site before they are needed, not on the day.

Our installed kitchens run $20,000 to $30,000 — cabinets, quartz counters, an island, a new sink and the plumbing, demo and haul-away, and labor. Not included: backsplash, appliances, flooring, and handles on most sets. The price works for a specific and finite reason: the cabinet sets came from projects that were cancelled after the cabinets had already been ordered, so they are paid for and sitting in our warehouse. When they are gone the price goes back to market.
