Alec's Construction paints house interiors in Mastic (11950), working out of the yard in East Patchogue. An interior job here is mostly preparation — cracks, nail pops, water stains, old glossy trim and, in older houses, old paint layers — because the finish coat only looks as good as the surface under it.
Interior Painting in Mastic
Mastic's houses are mostly 1950s-to-70s ranches and capes on small lots, and the interior painting picture changes depending on which side of the hamlet you are on. Along the Forge River and its canals, a lot of first floors were gutted and rebuilt quickly after 2012, so the walls are newer drywall, sometimes hung and finished in a hurry. Hurried finishing shows up years later as visible tape seams, nail pops and inside corners that split along the joint. Up toward Montauk Highway and the William Floyd Parkway, the houses are more likely to have their original walls, and the capes there have sloped upstairs ceilings and knee walls where the roof meets the room. Those slopes run cold in winter and hot in summer, and the seasonal movement opens cracks right at the angle. Both halves of Mastic need repair before paint, just a different kind of repair.
What We Look at First in Mastic
We want to know whether the walls are original or rebuilt, so we ask what has been opened up and then look for it ourselves: newer outlet boxes, a change in texture halfway down a wall, a seam where old meets new. On the river side we press on the low drywall near exterior walls and look for staining at the base. Upstairs in a cape we check the angle between the knee wall and the slope, where cracks come back if they are only caulked.
Painting Inside Small Canal-Street Houses
The canal-street houses are compact, and in a small house every wall shows. Rooms are close together, natural light is limited on narrow lots, and the color and the sheen matter more than in a big house: a light, washable finish makes a small room feel larger and stands up to daily use.
Salt air and humidity show inside as well. Window trim and sills take condensation every winter, and old paint there peels and blisters. It gets scraped back to sound paint, primed, and finished with a durable enamel.
Houses that were raised after 2012 often settled in the years after, and the drywall shows it in diagonal cracks over doors and windows and in corner tape that has let go. Those get cut out, re-taped and feathered properly rather than caulked over, so the cracks do not come back with the next season.

Preparation Comes First
Most of the time on a good interior job is spent before the paint can is opened. Rooms are cleared and covered, then every wall and ceiling is checked in raking light for cracks, dents, nail pops and old patches. Those get repaired and primed so they do not flash through the finish.
Water stains are sealed with a stain-blocking primer, or they come back through any amount of paint. Old oil-based trim is sanded and bonded before latex goes on. Then the finish: ceilings, walls, trim and doors, in that order, with clean lines at every edge and a walkthrough with you at the end.

Frequently Asked Questions
The walls on my Mastic first floor were replaced after Sandy. Why are the seams showing through the paint?
Seams that show through paint usually mean the joint compound was not feathered wide enough, or the paint went on before the compound fully dried, which was common when many houses were being rebuilt at once. The fix is to skim the joints wider, sand them flat, and prime the patched areas so they absorb paint the same as the rest of the wall. Otherwise the joints read as dull stripes whenever light hits the wall from the side.
How long does it take to paint the inside of a house in Mastic?
One room is usually a day or two, including the preparation. A whole house runs about a week, depending on the size, the ceilings, the trim and how much repair the walls need. We give you a schedule room by room so you can plan around it.
Can you paint over old oil-based trim in a Mastic house?
Yes, with the right preparation. The trim is cleaned, sanded to dull the gloss, and primed with a bonding primer. Without that primer, latex paint over old oil-based trim peels and scratches off easily. With it, the new finish holds up well.
Who issues the permit for interior painting work in Mastic?
Mastic files with the Town of Brookhaven at Independence Hill in Farmingville. Interior painting itself is not permitted work; where repairs open walls or touch plumbing or electrical, that part follows the department's rules, and we tell you if it applies.
