Poured concrete is cheaper on day one. That is the whole case for it, and it is a legitimate case. Everything else about this comparison favors pavers on Long Island, and the reason comes down to one thing: what happens when the ground moves.
Freeze-Thaw Is the Deciding Factor
Long Island winters cycle. We get stretches of nights below freezing followed by thaws, repeatedly, from December into March. Water that has soaked into the ground under your patio expands as it freezes, lifts the surface slightly, then releases as it thaws. That happens dozens of times a season.
A poured concrete slab is one rigid piece. When the ground under it moves unevenly, the slab cannot flex — it cracks. Control joints are cut into concrete specifically to make the inevitable crack happen in a straight line where you planned it rather than randomly across the field. That is a mitigation strategy, not a prevention.
A paver patio is hundreds of small units sitting on a flexible bedding layer with sand-filled joints. When the ground moves, the field moves with it and settles back. There is no monolithic slab to crack, because there is no slab.
Repairability Is the Other Big One
This is the argument that lands with most homeowners once they think about it for a minute.
If a section of paver patio settles — say the corner near a downspout — a mason lifts those pavers, corrects the base underneath, and resets the same units. When it is done you cannot tell where the repair was. Cost is typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on area.
If a concrete slab cracks, your options are: live with the crack, fill it with a sealant that will always be visible and will need redoing, or demolish and repour the entire section. There is no invisible repair for cracked concrete. Any patch is a permanent visual scar, because new concrete never matches cured concrete in color.
Cost Over 25 Years, Not Day One
On a 400 square foot patio on Long Island in 2026:
- Poured concrete: roughly $8,000–14,000 installed, broom finish. Stamped and colored concrete runs $14,000–22,000.
- Pavers: roughly $11,000–22,000 installed depending on paver line and pattern.
So concrete saves you real money up front — often three to six thousand dollars. Now run it forward. Plain concrete typically shows meaningful cracking within 8 to 15 years here. At that point you are either living with it or spending most of the original cost again to replace it. Pavers over the same period typically need joint sand refreshed once or twice and possibly one section re-leveled, which is a few hundred dollars each time.
Over 25 years, the paver patio usually costs less in total and looks better for more of that time. Over 8 years, concrete wins. Pick based on how long you plan to be in the house.
Where Concrete Genuinely Makes Sense
- You are selling soon. If the house goes on the market in two or three years, the cheaper surface that looks clean is the rational choice.
- Budget is the hard constraint. A well-poured concrete patio with proper base and control joints beats a cheap paver job on a thin base every single time. If the budget only reaches one of those, take the good concrete.
- Under a covered structure. A slab protected from freeze-thaw by a roof and good drainage behaves much better.
- Very large areas. At a certain size the per-square-foot gap becomes hard to justify.
Where Pavers Clearly Win
- Anywhere near trees. Roots move soil. Pavers accommodate it; slabs crack over it.
- Poor or clay-heavy soil. More seasonal movement means more slab cracking.
- Around pools. Better traction, cooler underfoot in the right materials, and individual units can be lifted for plumbing access.
- If utilities run underneath. Lifting twenty pavers to reach a line beats saw-cutting a slab.
- Long-term ownership. The repairability advantage compounds every year you stay.
What Matters More Than the Choice
A paver patio on four inches of poorly compacted base will fail faster than a concrete slab on twelve inches of properly compacted base. The base is the job. Whichever surface you choose, put your scrutiny on excavation depth, base depth, compaction lifts and drainage — and get those numbers in writing on the proposal.

Individual pavers rarely crack because they are small units manufactured at higher compressive strength than typical slab concrete, and the flexible joints let the field move. Concrete slabs crack because a rigid monolithic surface cannot accommodate ground movement.

Textured and tumbled pavers generally offer better wet traction than smooth-troweled concrete. Smooth, high-gloss sealed pavers can be slick, so around pools choose a textured surface and a matte sealer.

Can I put pavers over an existing concrete slab?
