Alec's Construction paints house interiors in Babylon (11702), working out of the yard in East Patchogue. An interior job here is mostly preparation — cracks, nail pops, water stains, old glossy trim and, in older houses, old paint layers — because the finish coat only looks as good as the surface under it.
Interior Painting in Babylon
Babylon Village's Victorians and four-squares around Argyle Lake and along Deer Park Avenue hold a surprise more often than newer houses do: wallpaper under the paint. In older homes it was common to paper the plaster and later paint right over the paper, sometimes more than once. It looks fine until the seams start to lift or bubble in humid weather. When we find it, the honest choices are to remove it, which means scoring, steaming and washing off the old paste, or, if the paper is tight everywhere, to seal it with an oil-based or shellac primer, skim the seams and paint. The south end is a different stock: post-war capes and ranches on the canals toward the bay, where steady humidity and salt air are hard on window stools, cabinet hardware and bathroom ceilings. There, the product matters more than the color: mildew-resistant bath finishes and a hard enamel on any wood near a window.
What We Look at First in Babylon
We look for seams. Lifting edges at the top of a wall, faint vertical lines under the paint, or a hollow spot that crackles under a thumb all point to paper. A small test cut in a hidden spot settles it. On the canal side we start in the bathrooms and laundry, where slow-drying paint and dark spotting usually mean the moisture has nowhere to go.
Painting Inside Small Canal-Street Houses
The canal-street houses are compact, and in a small house every wall shows. Rooms are close together, natural light is limited on narrow lots, and the color and the sheen matter more than in a big house: a light, washable finish makes a small room feel larger and stands up to daily use.
Salt air and humidity show inside as well. Window trim and sills take condensation every winter, and old paint there peels and blisters. It gets scraped back to sound paint, primed, and finished with a durable enamel.
Houses that were raised after 2012 often settled in the years after, and the drywall shows it in diagonal cracks over doors and windows and in corner tape that has let go. Those get cut out, re-taped and feathered properly rather than caulked over, so the cracks do not come back with the next season.

What an Interior Painting Job Includes
Furniture is moved to the middle of the room and covered, and the floors are protected. Outlet plates and hardware come off. Then the preparation: holes and cracks filled, nail pops reset, loose tape and plaster repaired, glossy trim scuffed, stains primed with a stain blocker, and everything sanded and wiped.
Ceilings are painted first, then the walls, then the trim and doors. Two coats is the standard on walls, with the colors and sheens confirmed with you before we start. At the end the plates go back, the furniture goes back, and we walk each room with you in good light.
Permits in Babylon
The Village of Babylon runs its own building department separately from the Town of Babylon, so which one applies depends on the address. Interior painting itself is not permitted work; where repairs open walls or touch plumbing or electrical, that part follows the department's rules, and we tell you if it applies.

Frequently Asked Questions
We think there is wallpaper under the paint in our Babylon house. Does it all have to come off?
Not always. If the paper is bonded tightly everywhere, we can seal it with a solvent-based primer that will not reactivate the old paste, skim any visible seams, and paint over it. If it is loose in places, those sections usually let go once wet paint hits them, so removal becomes the safer route. Removal means scoring, steaming, scraping and washing off adhesive residue, then priming the plaster before color.
Do you fix cracks and holes before painting in Babylon?
Yes, that is most of the job. Cracks are opened and re-taped where needed, nail pops are reset with screws, holes are patched and sanded, and water stains are sealed with a stain-blocking primer. Paint over unrepaired damage shows every flaw in the first good light.
Do I need to move my furniture before you paint in Babylon?
No. We move the furniture to the center of each room, cover it and the floors, and put everything back when the room is done. Small breakables, pictures and personal items are best put away by you before we arrive.
Who issues the permit for interior painting work in Babylon?
The Village of Babylon runs its own building department separately from the Town of Babylon, so which one applies depends on the address. Interior painting itself is not permitted work; where repairs open walls or touch plumbing or electrical, that part follows the department's rules, and we tell you if it applies.
