Alec's Construction paints house interiors in Commack (11725), working out of the yard in East Patchogue. An interior job here is mostly preparation — cracks, nail pops, water stains, old glossy trim and, in older houses, old paint layers — because the finish coat only looks as good as the surface under it.
Interior Painting in Commack
Most Commack houses were built in the 1960s, 70s and 80s, when trim was routinely painted with oil-based enamel. Since then the walls have gone through several latex repaints, but the baseboards, door casings and banisters often still carry that hard, yellowed oil finish. You can tell with a cotton ball dampened in denatured alcohol rubbed on a hidden spot: latex softens, oil does not. Latex brushed directly over old oil looks fine and then scratches off at the first bump from a vacuum. So the trim gets cleaned, deglossed, scuff-sanded and primed with a bonding primer before a waterborne enamel goes on, which also ends the yellowing. Commack's colonials and expanded ranches carry a lot of trim, with open stairwells, large windows and long hallways, so this step is a big part of the work. Where a ranch was expanded, the seam between the original house and the addition gets checked for cracking too.
What We Look at First in Commack
We start with the alcohol test on a baseboard behind a door, because the answer sets the whole woodwork plan. Then we look at the open stairwell, where the reach is longest and old cut lines show. In expanded houses we find the joint between the original and the addition, usually in a hallway or across a ceiling, and see whether it cracks along a straight line.
Painting Inside Larger Houses
The wooded hamlets have larger colonials, splits and custom houses with tall foyers, stairwells, two-storey family rooms, and a lot of trim. The challenge in these houses is height and detail.
Stairwells and foyers need staging or extension work done safely, and high walls show every roller lap if the paint is not kept wet across the whole wall. Ceilings in big rooms are cut and rolled in one continuous pass so the finish is even.
Crown molding, wainscoting, built-ins and six-panel doors are where the hours go. They get filled, caulked, sanded and finished with a durable enamel. In houses from the 1980s and 90s, the original builder-grade flat paint on the walls marks easily; repainting with a washable finish is a big part of the request. Winter is when these jobs are easiest to schedule room by room.

What an Interior Painting Job Includes
Furniture is moved to the middle of the room and covered, and the floors are protected. Outlet plates and hardware come off. Then the preparation: holes and cracks filled, nail pops reset, loose tape and plaster repaired, glossy trim scuffed, stains primed with a stain blocker, and everything sanded and wiped.
Ceilings are painted first, then the walls, then the trim and doors. Two coats is the standard on walls, with the colors and sheens confirmed with you before we start. At the end the plates go back, the furniture goes back, and we walk each room with you in good light.
Permits in Commack
Commack straddles the Town of Huntington and the Town of Smithtown, and the two do not file the same way. Huntington requires plans sealed by a licensed architect or professional engineer for alterations over ten thousand dollars; Smithtown does not have the same threshold. Interior painting itself is not permitted work; where repairs open walls or touch plumbing or electrical, that part follows the department's rules, and we tell you if it applies.

Frequently Asked Questions
Our Commack trim has turned yellow. Is that dirt or the paint?
Usually the paint. Oil-based enamel yellows as it ages, especially in rooms without much daylight, and the original trim in many Commack houses was finished that way. Washing will not bring it back. Moving to a waterborne enamel solves it, but only with the right prep: clean, degloss, sand, and a bonding primer so the new coat grips the old oil instead of peeling.
Do I need to move my furniture before you paint in Commack?
No. We move the furniture to the center of each room, cover it and the floors, and put everything back when the room is done. Small breakables, pictures and personal items are best put away by you before we arrive.
How long does it take to paint the inside of a house in Commack?
One room is usually a day or two, including the preparation. A whole house runs about a week, depending on the size, the ceilings, the trim and how much repair the walls need. We give you a schedule room by room so you can plan around it.
