What Gutter Installation Costs on Long Island

Gutter pricing gets quoted per linear foot, which sounds simple and hides most of the real cost. Two houses with identical footage can be thousands apart because of height, roof geometry, fascia condition and where the water has to go once it leaves the downspout.

These are Long Island market ranges, not a quote for your house. We give a written number after walking the property, because the things that move the price are the things you have to look at.

Seamless Aluminum Gutter — Installed

• 5-inch K-style, .032 aluminum: roughly $9 to $16 per linear foot installed
• 6-inch K-style with 3x4 downspouts: roughly $13 to $22 per linear foot installed
• Half-round aluminum: roughly $18 to $30 per linear foot
• Copper, K-style or half-round: roughly $35 to $70 per linear foot

A typical Long Island house runs 150 to 220 linear feet. That puts a straightforward 5-inch replacement on a one-story ranch in the $1,600 to $3,000 range, and a two-story colonial in 6-inch with proper downspout count in the $3,000 to $6,500 range.

Gutter Guards

Guards are priced per linear foot on top of the gutter:

• Perforated aluminum: $6 to $12 per foot
• Micro-mesh, stainless, professionally installed: $12 to $25 per foot
• Branded reverse-curve systems sold by the national companies: $25 to $45 per foot, which on a 200-foot house is $5,000 to $9,000

• Gutter cleaning, whole house: $180 to $400 depending on size, height and how bad it is
• Re-pitching a sagging run: $200 to $600
• Re-securing with hidden hangers, per run: $150 to $450

The Seven Things That Actually Move Your Number

1. Height. A single-story ranch in Holbrook is ladder work. A three-story Victorian in Port Jefferson or a two-story colonial in Garden City needs staging, more labour and more risk, and it prices accordingly.

2. Roof geometry. A simple gable has two long straight runs. A house with dormers, valleys, intersecting rooflines and multiple inside corners has more corners to fabricate, more transitions and slower work. Splits and hi-ranches in Medford, Farmingville and Coram look small and are not simple.

3. Fascia condition. This is the one that surprises people. If the old gutters have been overflowing for years, some of the fascia behind them is soft, and it has to come out. On a badly neglected house this can add $1,500 to $4,000 — and it is not an upsell, it is the reason the new gutters will still be straight in ten years.

4. Downspout count and routing. A house that needs six downspouts costs more than one that needs three, and running a downspout down a wall with no clear path to grade takes real time.

5. Drainage work. Extensions are cheap. Buried PVC to daylight or to a drywell is real excavation and real money, and on the canal blocks in Lindenhurst, West Islip, South Merrick and Massapequa it is often what the house actually needs.

6. Material and gauge. The gap between .027 and .032 aluminum is small on the invoice and large in ten-year outcome. Copper is a different price class entirely.

7. Tear-off and disposal. Removing and hauling 200 feet of old aluminum is included in a real quote. If a number looks low, check whether it is.

Where the Cheap Quote Saves Its Money

Every unusually low gutter quote on Long Island is saving money in one of the same five places, and none of them show up on the day of the install:

• Thinner .027 coil instead of .032
• Spikes and ferrules instead of hidden hangers, or hangers at 36 inches instead of 24
• Fewer downspouts than the runs need
• No fascia inspection — the new gutter goes straight onto whatever is there
• Downspouts discharging at the foundation with a splash block and nothing else

You will not notice any of that in year one. You will notice all of it in year four.
